Greece in the age of heroes. Patroclus, an awkward young prince, has been exiled to the court of King Peleus and his perfect son Achilles. Despite their differences, Achilles befriends the shamed prince, and as they grow into young men skilled in the arts of war and medicine, their bond blossoms into something deeper – despite the displeasure of Achilles's mother Thetis, a cruel sea goddess. But when word comes that Helen of Sparta has been kidnapped, Achilles must go to war in distant Troy and fulfill his destiny. Torn between love and fear for his friend, Patroclus goes with him, little knowing that the years that follow will test everything they hold dear.

An escape through time
The narration makes this book so comfortable and captivating to listen to!
Well written and heart breaking, this book surprised me with its plot. The story is easy to follow, apart from the many different characters at some point.

This is one of those books where my expectations were so very high they ended up ruining my final impressions. "The Song of Achilles" is a perfectly well-written sort of retelling of the Trojan War, recounted through the POV of Patroclus, who, in Greek mythology, is the childhood friend and presumed lover of war hero Achilles. There's nothing particularly original that's being brought to this particular story (at least in my opinion), but it is clear how much love the author has for those two characters (Achilles especially). Miller reimagines nothing but builds her novel with greater details than prior sources. As there's no way to avoid the inevitability of the ending (as has happened with other retellings of classics), it's hard not to feel like events are being dragged on for the aesthetics. The words are pretty, sure, and I liked that there's not too much fuss to them either, and the love story is believable and obviously a key argument to the book's success, but... I don't know, I may be just miffed the reviews were so glorious (people cried!) yet there wasn't a lot of plot anyway. This did more of a disservice to me, but it's a gorgeous book if you're into all of the above.
NB: Unlike my review, the narration by Douglas Frazer was magnificent.
