À propos de ce contenu audio

In 1893, there's no such thing as witches. There used to be, in the wild, dark days before the burnings began, but now witching is nothing but tidy charms and nursery rhymes. If the modern woman wants any measure of power, she must find it at the ballot box.

But when the three Eastwood sisters join the suffragists of New Salem, they begin to pursue the forgotten ways that might turn the women's movement into the witch's movement. Stalked by shadows and sickness, hunted by forces who will not suffer a witch to vote - and perhaps not even to live - the sisters must delve into the oldest magics, draw new alliances and heal the bond between them if they want to survive.

There's no such thing as witches. But there will be.

The author has an beautiful poetic style filled with metaphors and a great sense of atmosphere. She also has skilled writing technique. She keeps up interest by mixes past and present tenses, as well as varied main protagonist's view, without ever being confusing.

The story is much deeper than it first seems. The character development is plausible and interesting. Psychology, thoughts and ambiance are the main focus, but the book never gets boring. There is a good inclusive intent with characters from varied ages, skin color, sexuality, nationality, genders, though some are very briefly seen. The main character is a person with a physical handicap, which is too rarely the case. You will have to wait a while for good male characters appearing in the story, but be reassured, there are some later on.

Violence is described mostly in ellipses or only suggested as to past traumas, and not dwelt on in present times, yet sensitive readers may find just a couple of scenes a bit upsetting, though considering the topic, it could have been a lot worse. The author really kept it minimal.

The mix of historical elements such as black people and women's rights movement with fantasy elements works fine into adding depth to the story, making this imaginative alternative version almost real. Actually who knows, maybe it is ^.^

Excellent novel with great narrative voice
