À propos de cette écoute
Newlyweds Alice and Jake are a picture-perfect couple. Alice, once a singer in a well-known rock band, is now a successful lawyer. Jake is a partner in an up-and-coming psychology practice. Their life together holds endless possibilities. After receiving an enticing wedding gift from one of Alice's prominent clients, they decide to join an exclusive and mysterious group known only as the Pact.
The goal of the Pact seems simple: to keep marriages happy and intact. And most of its rules make sense: Always answer the phone when your spouse calls. Exchange thoughtful gifts monthly. Plan a trip together once per quarter. Never mention the Pact to anyone. Alice and Jake are initially seduced by the glamorous parties, the sense of community, their widening social circle of like-minded couples. And then one of them breaks the rules. The young lovers are about to discover that for adherents to the Pact, membership, like marriage, is for life. And the Pact will go to any lengths to enforce that rule. For Jake and Alice, the marriage of their dreams is about to become their worst nightmare.

Interesting moral ?
Attention, this story might put you through the wringer: You get a couple who is subjected to threats, punishments, torture, humiliation, and death threats. You also get a cult which is responsible for all this and does not even need to hide from police or public officials. The cult is proud of its doings and kidnaps and tortures and kills people. The description of all the torture and humiliation seems to be a mixture of Orwell's brain washing in his book 1984, and reports from concentration camps in WW II. For about 12h30m the reader is subjected to this treatment. Things seem utterly without hope. I guess the author got caught up in her own hopelessness, because in the last half hour, loo and behold, the hero travels to the head of the cult, protests about the treatment, and the head of the cult actually apologizes to him and offers him the job of cult manager. The ´bad´ people, who are responsible, or so it seems, for all the ´bad´ things in the cult are given the same treatment as their victims (an eye for an eye?? is this the take-away moral?), but the cult itself (the PACT) is whitewashed, all the murders, torture and humiliations are forgiven and forgotten. It turns out, stripped of the so-called exaggerations, the cult is actually a good thing, helping married couples to stay together.
I am stunned and outraged. Okay, this is pure imagination, but it is sick imagination.
This is a book you need to miss, absolutely.
