Seabury Quinn
À propos de cette écoute
Seabury Quinn's short stories were featured in well more than half of the pulp magazine Weird Tales' original publication run.
His most famous character, the supernatural French detective Dr. Jules de Grandin, investigated cases involving monsters, devil worshippers, serial killers, and spirits from beyond the grave, often set in the small town of Harrisonville, New Jersey. In de Grandin there are familiar shades of both Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot, and alongside his assistant, Dr. Samuel Trowbridge, de Grandin's knack for solving mysteries - and his outbursts of peculiar French-isms (grand Dieu!) - captivated for nearly three decades.
Collected for the first time in trade editions, The Complete Tales of Jules de Grandin presents all 93 published works featuring the supernatural detective. Presented in chronological order over five volumes, this is the definitive collection of an iconic pulp hero.

a fun surprise ! ( unless you are sjw)
as a bilingual french medieval researcher and Lovecraft enthousiast I've loved Quinn's french parnormal detective mr de Grandin.
I love the author's accuracy towards old folklore, european culture and theosophy.
the stories are fast paced, easy to follow and enjoyable all around.
Those stories made think of sherlock holmes ( of course) but also twin peaks and lighther supernatural tv shows like buffy , lucifer or supernatural.
for an uncomplicated and light hearted read with some imaginative gorry scenes and interesting vilains/monsters with often times well thought motives.
warning : the damsel in destress is a recurrent/ unavoidable trope and although there are several clever and interesting female characters I wouldn't recommend this book to any modern feminist or if you are easily offended by racial/ gender/ ablist old views. although pretty open minded and tolerant compared to authors of his time , Quinn's characters remain christian men of the early XXth ...
