Strong Narration, But Missteps in Some Character Voices
I really appreciated the soothing quality of Rosamund Pike's voice. Her narration was done beautifully, with a gentle, calm tone that still managed to capture the intensity and pacing of the action scenes, drawing you into the story effortlessly. However, I did have some difficulties with her portrayal of certain male characters, especially Perrin. The way she voiced him felt both jarring and cringe, which pulled me out of the story and even made me laugh sometimes, as it seemed more suited to a minor comic-relief villain than a main character. Additionally, her portrayals of Zarine and Nynaeve felt too soft for characters who are supposed to be quite fiery. On the other hand, I thought she did a great job with Mat and Elayne, and I really liked the accent she gave the Aiel. It’s unfortunate that some character portrayals distracted from the immersion at times.
Regarding the story itself, I found it to be an improvement over the first two volumes, although it still suffers from a slow pace and overly long descriptions. It was a bit disappointing that Rand, who was central to the first two books, was largely absent. That said, I did enjoy the increased focus on Mat, whose chapters were the most entertaining for me.
