À propos de cette écoute
Just because you're through with your past, doesn't mean it's through with you.
Margaret Beringer didn't have an easy adolescence. She hated her name, was less than popular in school, and was always cast aside as a "farm kid." However, with the arrival of Courtney Carrington, Margaret's youth sparked into color. Courtney was smart, beautiful, and put together - everything Margaret wasn't. Who would have imagined that they'd fit together so perfectly?
But first loves can scar.
Margaret hasn't seen Courtney in years and that's for the best. But when Courtney loses her father and returns to Tanner Peak to take control of the family store, Margaret comes face-to-face with her past and the woman she's tried desperately to forget. The fact that Courtney has grown up more beautiful than ever certainly doesn't help matters.
A small town romance.

The narration didnt do justice
I was quickly invested in Courtney and Maggy's story, even though it falls into YA territory. Brayden writes teenage angst and dynamics really well. The secondary characters are endearing, and I felt like I was living in that warm, small town. The one-person POV really helped make it immersive.
Reading the blurb, I thought the book would strike a balance between young love and second chances. I didn’t expect to stay in the past for so long. I spent most of the book (16 chapters!) waiting to return to the present. Knowing it was coming, I spent a lot of time anxious, waiting for the shoe to drop.
My poor heart, which longs for second-chance stories, was a bit disappointed.
What Maggy went through was clearly traumatic and tragic, and depression is something I would never underestimate. However, the issue was that there was no nuance from Maggy's side, which made her very frustrating. She placed all the blame on Courtney, who was nothing but devoted and patient until she made a bad decision out of despair and heartbreak. I loved Courtney so much. Overall, I was taken by this story. Now, THE negative point: the narration. I hate to be harsh and maybe it was one of the narrator’s early work, but it was just emotionless. Whether it was joy, heartbreak, drama, or vulnerability, it sounded like the characters were happily picking strawberries. This made me really frustrated.
