A basic Ultramarines novel
Nothing much to say, it's a pretty basic storyline for a loyalist SM novel. The stakes are WAY TOO HIGH for what actually happens and then the consequences completely ignored (at least in this book, there is an epilogue hinting that following books will continue this plot). I like that the Space Marines are very powerful compared to baseline humans, but still die. The Arbites are also pushed up a notch in terms of power scaling which I like and find logical.
The narration is excellent, nothing to say about it 👍
Overall I'd say a comfortable 76/100, just like white break, it's good but still very basic.
++Beginning Spoilers++
The antagonists are all dumber than the next, and while it makes the ending more satisfying and there's quite a lot of karma going on in the plot, it also makes it hard to understand why they're doing what they're doing. The main antagonist has the same level as one from Indiana Jones.
The ending battle is pretty lame, nothing much happens and the fucking C'tan just leaves through the roof to 70k light years away so that Uriel doesn't destroy his ship that's in the warp but like... why doesn't he do itonce he's gone??? What was the point of escaping so that he doesn't blow up your ship if he could've done it either way?? The only reason why its escape worked is because of the stupidity of Ventris...
