Description
Brought to you by Penguin.
The audiobook of Hogfather is narrated by the BAFTA award-winning actor Sian Clifford (Fleabag, Vanity Fair, Quiz). BAFTA and Golden Globe award-winning actor Bill Nighy (Love Actually; Pirates of the Caribbean; Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) reads the footnotes, and Peter Serafinowicz (Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace; Shaun of the Dead) stars as the voice of Death. Featuring a new theme tune composed by James Hannigan.
'Humans need fantasy to be human. To be the place where the falling angel meets the rising ape.'
'Twas the night before Hogswatch and all through the house…something was missing.
Superstition makes things work in the Discworld and undermining it can have consequences. When Death realizes that belief in the Hogfather is dangerously low, he decides to take on the job. But it's just not right to find a seven-foot skeleton creeping down your chimney and trying to say 'ho, ho, ho'.
It's the last night of the year, the time is turning, and if Susan, gothic governess and Death's granddaughter, doesn't sort everything out by morning, there won't be a morning. Ever again…
Hogfather is the fourth book in the Death series, but you can listen to the Discworld novels in any order.
The first book in the Discworld series – The Colour of Magic – was published in 1983. Some elements of the Discworld universe may reflect this.

like rediscovering an old friend
It took a while to re-adjust, but a couple of things feel so much better.
The female voices for one... no longer a sneer or a squeak or a whine. Women in this story are not automatically stupid or annoying. I'm looking forward to the new Angua !!
Having said that, the male voices aren't made idiotic either. The reader speaks normally and doesn't over-play unless the character does. I loved the different local accents, and changes of person, character and mood were easy to follow.
The many internal monologues were nicely done, half whispered and pensive. The play on speed, volume and pacing is great throughout and the arch-chancellor singing was a surprisingly stand-out moment. While I was not initially a massive fan of the footnotes in a separate voice, you get used to it, and the voice of death is, well, to die for!
I usually listen with headphones, but the higher range of sounds was at some times jarring, so I ended up listening at lower volume or without directing sound at my ear drum. This may be due to my headset rather than the recording, but there it is.
Fabulous job! Now I just need to invest 40 months membership renewing the whole dratted collection!! Fine ! Take my money ! I hate you for being this good...

A great dDiscworld novel
Unfortunately, I have difficulties with Sian Clifford’s delivery and rhythm. Most of the time, there’s no emphasis, no life, just a fast-paced word stream, like she’s just rushing to finish faster.
