captivating but confusing
While the story and the setting are great, and a lot of care had been given to the performances and sound design, I find that such "audio movies" are more confusing and difficult to follow that a straightforward reading of the book would have been. What is sometimes explained in several paragraphes in the book is mentioned during a split second remark by a character in the audiobook. This is also sometimes a bit awkward, when characters have odd and unnatural conversations between them that only serve to reveal their character to the audience even though saying those lines out loud don't really make sense in universe. That being said, the characters are still very charismatic thanks to the author's wonderful writing elevated by the great voice acting. The fantastical setting is easy to adhere to, due to it's proximity to the real world and the fuzziness of it's magical elements. All in all, I greatly enjoyed revisiting Pullman's universe with this dramatic reading of one of my favorite books as a teenager, and I highly recommend it for those who enjoy simple fantasy.
