À propos de cette écoute

This program is read by the author.

A nonfiction investigation into masculinity, For the Love of Men provides actionable steps for how to be a man in the modern world, while also exploring how being a man in the world has evolved.

In 2019, traditional masculinity is both rewarded and sanctioned. Men grow up being told that boys don’t cry and dolls are for girls (a newer phenomenon than you might realize - gendered toys came back in vogue as recently as the '80s). They learn they must hide their feelings and anxieties, that their masculinity must constantly be proven. They must be the breadwinners, they must be the romantic pursuers. This hasn’t been good for the culture at large: 99 percent of school shooters are male; men in fraternities are 300 percent (!) more likely to commit rape; a woman serving in uniform has a higher likelihood of being assaulted by a fellow soldier than to be killed by enemy fire.

In For the Love of Men, Liz offers a smart, insightful, and deeply researched guide for what we're all going to do about toxic masculinity. For both women looking to guide the men in their lives and men who want to do better and just don’t know how, For the Love of Men will lead the conversation on men's issues in a society where so much is changing, but gender roles have remained strangely stagnant.

What are we going to do about men? Liz Plank has the answer. And it has the possibility to change the world for men and women alike.

For the love of us men

Review of “For the Love of Men”

    Positive Aspects
“For the Love of Men” is a book with noble intentions, aiming to address modern masculinity and its implications for men and society. The chapter on male friendships is particularly strong, using a solid statistical foundation to explore how meaningful male connections can be fostered, with examples from various countries. It highlights an important, often overlooked topic and offers practical insights into the benefits of nurturing male bonds. The conclusion, too, stands out—it ties the book together with a sense of hope and clarity, reflecting the author’s genuine desire to encourage positive change.

    Negative Aspects
While the book has moments of clarity and good intentions, it suffers from fundamental flaws that overshadow its message. Chief among them is the question of audience: Who is this book for? If it’s for men unaware of the toxic aspects of machismo, they’re unlikely to pick it up. If it’s for women, it hardly offers new insights—most readers are already familiar with the societal challenges of being male.

A major issue is the book’s persistent focus on men while indirectly referring almost exclusively to American men. The examples, anecdotes, and statistics are overwhelmingly US-centric, creating a narrow lens for a topic that deserves a broader cultural perspective. While the book claims to discuss masculinity in general, it often conflates issues unique to American society—such as gun violence—with universal concerns, which weakens its argument.

The chapter on violence and guns, for instance, feels disconnected and out of place. While I fully support stricter gun control, the discussion here doesn’t fit the narrative the author wants to create about masculinity. It comes across as a separate issue awkwardly shoehorned into the book. The attempt to correlate gun ownership with male suicide rates is particularly flawed. For example, France, where guns are heavily restricted, has a male suicide rate comparable to that of the US. This undermines the author’s implied causation between guns and suicide, making the argument both simplistic and unconvincing.

The main issue, however, lies in the weak and often flawed research underpinning the author’s arguments. Many claims rely on pseudo-research or cherry-picked data points that fail to establish meaningful correlations. For example, the assertion that “men in Norway benefit from gender equality because the country has one of the longest life expectancies for men” is nonsensical. A single data point does not establish a causal relationship. One could just as easily argue the opposite: “Men in Norway suffer under gender equality because their suicide rate is five times higher than that of women, compared to three times in the US.” Both claims are equally invalid because neither demonstrates a statistically rigorous correlation.

The author’s use of evidence grows increasingly dubious as the book progresses. At times, anecdotal sources such as Facebook comments are presented as representative of broader societal trends, undermining the credibility of the arguments. The lack of analytical depth makes it difficult to take the book seriously, and the reader is left frustrated by its logical inconsistencies.

    Conclusion
“For the Love of Men” had the potential to contribute meaningfully to discussions around masculinity, but its shortcomings in research, logic, and audience targeting make it a missed opportunity. Its US-centric lens and inclusion of unrelated topics such as gun violence detract from its broader message. While it raises some valid points, these are drowned out by a lack of rigor and an oversimplification of complex issues. The author’s heart is in the right place, but the execution leaves much to be desired.
