Narrator’s French is terrible
The reader pronounces French names and cities so badly that I compare listening to this book to driving through France with the English SatNav blaring at you. It’s so terrible that it’s actually absurd. Having loved the Wolf Hall trilogy, I was eager to dive into Mantel’s historical novel about the French Revolution, but the narrator’s French is so ridiculous (and he “attacks” the French names with such gusto) that I couldn’t actually stand to listen to it. I tried multiple times to come back to it, but I cannot manage it. How on earth was a reader who cannot speak even passable French hired to record this book??? The mind boggles. Big waste of money.

Brilliant
A marvellous explanation of the French Revolution written by perhaps the best author of our time. If you haven’t read it, you should if you are interested in historical fiction that combines well researched historical fact with imagination

Character portrayal
A fundamental part of European history, brought to life. I followed a history podcast in parallel from Mike Duncan, which added the military aspects outside of Paris. I had no problems with the French names - though I am not French but after 40yrs of living here…
