Norma Beishir

Norma Beishir can't remember when she ever wanted to be anything but a writer--except for that period when she was 5 years old and wanted to be a jockey. Then, in third grade, she fell in love with CHARLOTTE'S WEB and the notion of being able to create her own magical worlds and characters. She knew early on that she was going to be a novelist. Journalism, nonfiction--not for her. She has trouble coloring within the lines, as anyone who knows her can tell you. No, it had to be fiction. She once naively submitted a handwritten manuscript to Bantam Books--and actually got a response. The editor who had taken the time to look at what she had sent wrote that she had talent but was not ready to be published at that point. That letter kept her going for the next 15 years, until her "overnight success" came with the publication of DANCE OF THE GODS in 1988. She went on to publish five commercial novels with Berkley Publishing and nine romantic comedies via Silhouette. Her last commercially-pubished novel was in 1997, when personal and professional crises forced her to the sidelines for a while. She still wanted to write--claiming to be no good at anything else--but was frustrated because the novels she really wanted to write were vetoed by the powers that be because they "weren't glamorous." She considered screenwriting for a while, but says selling your story to Hollywood is a lot like giving your baby up for adoption. "You give up all rights, and if you do ever see it again, you probably won't recognize it." Finally, she opted for self-publishing--ambivalent at first--but found the freedom that comes with CreateSpace and Kindle is creatively liberating. Now she's writing a series in collaboration with her son, Collin. The first book in that series is CHASING THE WIND. She's also written FINAL HOURS, the novel she never thought she'd write, a story of star-crossed lovers at the end of the world. Member, International Thriller Writers
