The news from the foothills of Parnassus is that I have just released a new novel, which early readers say is my best to date. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it and that you will love that the hero is a retired guy who still has agency. "The Engraver" is part character study, part thriller—I confess to liking John Le Carré a lot more than Henry James, and so I've given the engraver a nemesis and set the story on a mysterious yacht off the coast of California and in greater San Diego and Germany. Writing "The Engraver" has stretched me, and reading it, I hope, will stretch you. When I started, I never imagined having to learn about engraving, currency, counterfeiting, the EU, PTSD, Clara Schumann, Julius Caesar's campaigns against the German tribes, and yachts. And one of the very best parts was giving my imagination free rein to put all these elements together. A little about me. I'm an oligomath. Don't look for the word in the dictionary. I've coined the term to describe someone who does a few things passably well. Unlike a polymath—who might, for example, understand the mechanics of how to throw a javelin well enough to win a regional metal (whether he can actually hurl said javelin at all is another matter), read a bit of cuneiform, and be able to recite the school lunch menus for Taipei and Omaha—oligomaths are pitifully unaccomplished. Take me, my best skill is loving my family—my wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. I'm pretty good at writing fiction and poetry—I'm terrible at nonfiction since that requires actual knowledge. And at one time I was good at biomedical research. Fortunately I can still tell the difference between CRISPR and Rye Crisp. contact me: poet@lieberman.net; Michaellieberman.com
