In this episode of Traverse Talks, Jim Horn dives into the topic of septic systems in Grand Traverse County, spurred by a recent board of commissioners meeting. With over 25,000 septic systems in the county, Jim discusses the lack of a septic ordinance prior to 2024 and the potential environmental and health impacts of improperly maintained systems. He introduces key speakers, including Christine Chrissman from the Watershed Center and Mike Lahey from the County Health Department, who talk about the urgency of implementing an inspection program, especially with upcoming statewide legislation. A committee has been formed to address these issues and develop an ordinance to ensure the proper maintenance of septic systems in the region.

Should the Grand Traverse County Board consider establishing an ethics committee? This question was presented to the candidates for Districts 3 and 5 at The League of Women Voters Forum on September 26. I find their responses interesting, and given recent circumstances, I believe the County Board needs to take a serious look at this issue.
