Much of it has to do with fear – of change, of immigrants, of the shrinking number of jobs, of being surpassed by groups that were historically lower on the socioeconomic order, of once mighty economies slowing, of your powerful nation now being challenged by those growing richer… Fear provides the underlying context of the political narrative. It is the human condition that the nationalism offered by the populist right provides a false but compelling answer to.
