• Résumé

  • Frank W. Kelly is a multi award-winning independent filmmaker. He has been making films his way for over 20 years. He has made 13 films, including short’s, documentaries and two feature length films. Frank has made three short films with Ablevision Ireland, a group helping young adults with intellectual disabilities gain experience in media. He is used to working on low budgets, in a short time frame, with very little equipment or resources. But this hasn’t stopped his films from being selected by International Film Festivals, Winning Awards or selling his films to national broadcasters. Frank also worked as the short film programmer at the San Francisco Irish Film Festival for three years, he's even written episodes on The Tom and Jerry Show! He is passionate about short Indie films.

This podcast is going to be about all that, and more. This year Frank changed tack, he made 3 new short films and wrote a book in a four month period! How? By making films in The Gaps! He writes about it in his new book "8 Simple Steps to Making Your Short Film" and he'll be sharing that info with you here.

    • On Rejection
      Dec 7 2021

All right guys, I'm back! I found a gap, so I'm dropping an episode!!! This one is on one of the biggest, most dejecting things we face as artists, Rejection!!! It's just part of life, of everyone's life, but for us, it comes a little more often. And because we put so much of ourselves, our vision, our time into these projects of ours it's really really really hard not to take that rejection personally. It's a gut punch. It can knock the wind out of you, and for some, it can stop them completely!

But I'm here to say that you shouldn't let that happen. Here a different way to think about rejection, and maybe a couple of tools to help you move on from it. Hope you enjoy.

      Love,

      Frank

    • On Poverty
      Nov 1 2021

      Hey Guys,

Sorry it's been a couple of weeks. I got busy! Mainly with the kids being off school for Halloween mid-term, but I've also been creative. I've been working on the kickstarter campaign for the book, which was successful! WOOT!!! So that's going into print. Happy Days! I've been writing a lot, prepping stuff for next year. And, tomorrow I'm shooting another short film. Its a script by Bill Murphy, the actor from Sacred Heart and The Valley Monologues. This will be my 4th film this year! So, you see, you can do it! Create, don't wait!

This episode is a little different, but it's a topic that's important to me. It's about poverty, and being poor while trying to be a filmmaker. I've experience both. I grew up poor, I've been poor as an adult and I've experience poverty and the isolation, anxiety and embarrassment that brings. But I persevered, through all that I found a way to stay creative and make films. And I'll talk to you about how you can too. How to be a broke a$$ filmmaker!

You know, that was going to be the title on 8 Simple Steps, but I changed tack! Maybe it'll be the title of the next book! A guide to making it without a penny! Watch this space. In the meantime, enjoy this episode.

      Love,

      Frank

      Hey Guys,

OK, so looks like I'm continuing, I did 9 eps, said I was finishing, then I did a bonus to talk about the Kickstarter campaign for the book (link below) and here I am with ep 11... I mean, I don't even think I had a break in there anywhere! Oh well! Hey, I enjoy doing these. And maybe a couple of people enjoy listening. Until someone tells me to stop I might just keep doing them!
