When a coma patient starts to have contractions and gives birth to a baby boy, the child's arrival triggers an investigation into serious sexual assault.

Detectives McQuillan and Blalock are handed the case, while the internal hospital team collects data to help with the investigation.

When Dr. Angela Crawford, who helped deliver the baby, learns that the child will be put in foster care, she and her husband agree to take the little boy in.

Meanwhile, a young nurse, Jenny O'Hearn, helps compile data on the rapist and discovers several strange things. When Jenny is attacked, it forces the detectives to look at the case from a different perspective.

    The twist is incredible ! Did not see it coming. And the narrator performance was really good. Couldn’t stop once I started.

    Though the reader can guess the ending from the first chapters, the interpretation is compelling and the story well paced. However, some characters or situations are too cliché or even not verosimile, making it very hard to believe the story, as the fact that the reader is always one step ahead of experienced detectives. it's entertaining nevertheless. Do not expect a plot twist, though.

    I had listened to, and greatly enjoyed, 2 other books by the same author, so I was surprised and disappointed at the tedious pace and repetition in this one. Essentially there is action at the beginning and end, with nothing happening in the (very long) middle. No spoiler, but I also guessed the 'surprise' outcome from an early stage.

    Good story but an absolute torture to listen to the narrator’s voice and intonation. Simply intolerable listening to her, which ruined the experience of a good story.

    Nothing at all happens beyond the initial setup and the awful twist in the end. The whole thing relies on everybody being stupid and awful at their jobs (the police, the doctors…) By the half point I was listening at 2x, finished it at 2.5x. Even free, it’s too expensive. Stay away!

    ...as I hardly ever stop reading/listening to a book due to pure boredom but wow, this one really disappointed me. Gave it a long while but just couldn't listen to it anymore. Apart from the beginning nothing happens and as someone already mentioned before, you can kinda guess too easily how it will all fold out. Shame because the other books from this author are great !! So skip this one and go on to the "texte" one :)
