Kira Navárez dreamed of life on new worlds
Now she’s awakened a nightmare

During a routine survey mission on an uncolonized planet, Kira finds an alien relic. At first she’s delighted, but elation turns to terror when the ancient dust around her begins to move.

As war erupts among the stars, Kira is launched into a galaxy-spanning odyssey of discovery and transformation. First contact isn’t at all what she imagined, and events push her to the very limits of what it means to be human.

While Kira faces her own horrors, Earth and its colonies stand upon the brink of annihilation. Now, Kira might be humanity’s greatest and final hope . . .

A powerful piece of SF, with intelligent writing and big ideas (Adrian Tchaikovsky)
Rollicking pace, rapidly developing stakes . . . A fun, fast-paced epic that science fiction fans will gobble up (Kirkus Reviews)
The skills honed in his YA fantasy series, Inheritance, are on full display here in his vibrant world building, especially in the mythology of the alien tech. Paolini populates this universe with a large cast of interesting and relatable characters . . . lending the story a sincere emotional depth. Highly recommended for fans of James A. Corey's The Expanse series and for fantasy fans willing to try space opera (Booklist starred review)
Fans of all kinds, one can be sure, will come to question, and stay to explore (Washington Post)
Great space opera with rockets on (Daily Mail)

I've rarely seen a sci-fi universe as coherent as this one. With my college level of biology, physics and chemistry, I've found the science in the story very convincing. As if the story could really happen.
All the loopholes I could think of were accounted for and explained, there were no deus ex machina nor strange coincidences. The story is extremely well built, and even though it could have ended in death many times, it's satisfying to see how far the author could take the adventure without it sounding unrealistic.
After reading the Eragon books, I was not expecting another masterpiece in the sci-fi genre. Even though I can see many parallels between the two universes, I remain fascinated with both.

I've also found the listening experience quite pleasant, the voices of the different characters recognisable and the emotions matching the context

    A gem

I had a feeling early in the story that it would shape into a favourite, but I had no idea how much ! I have commented on Twitter (@quinceyforder) and yesterday on the AMA chat, but To Sleep is now among my all time favourite sci-fi stories among with Dune, the Mars trilogy and Mass Effect. Can’t wait for more stories in the Fractal verse!

Now one of my all time favourite

From start to finish I was captivated, pulled in as the story developed and got better minute bu minute! Haven’t enjoyed a book like this one in ages! Thanks Christopher!

My feelings are mixed. The performance is neat, she's doing a great job all along. The voices, the accents, the tone, I don't see how anyone could do better than that.
Overall, it's olso a very good story. The plot itself, the univers, the way it's presented, the worldbuilding, the way technology works, it's all very credible, very well done. The writting style is olso quite neutral, not ''in the way'' of you immersing yourself in the story and I like that.
Actually, the only real problem I have with this book : ... the caracters. To me, and I get it's my own preference but... they're quite simply unsufferable. Especially Kira but all the caracters are so excruciatingly bland, boring, generic, cliché (except the shipmind, thank God for Greg, he's the much needed spice on a bland and boiled chicken thigh).
Kira is wasting so much of her time feeling guilty, and even more guilty, unwilling to exploit her full potential, petty sobing and feeling sorry for herself. The dialogues are flat. She olso has a serious attachment issue or something bc what's her deal with being alone? She's alone for a few months only waking up once a week... like. Gurl it's ok, you're so dramatic. It's every introvert's dream, and it's only a few weeks all put together so...relax.
Olso, are male writers under the impression that women appreciate unwashed men? Since when is being unwashed and smelling like sweat sexy? I'm confused. Everytime - every single time - the author wants to induce a sens of sensuality, the male protagonist is smelling like sweat, or musc, or his skin is 'salty'. If a man is smelling like sweat everytime you go near, it's not bc he's a hard working manly man packed with pheromones and hairs on the chest... it's bc he's unwashed. And that's not sexy. I'm sorry.
And last but not least, it has no business being this long, I bearly remember my life before this. But I'm realy glad I made it through the whole thing bc the ending is quite good, and the last 4h or so are more intresting than the 15h before that.
In the end, it's a very good story but Im not going to miss it.

    Yes and no
